Mar 16, 1948 — Oct 28, 2024
Retired Command Sergeant Major Taft Dean Webster Sr., 76, passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife and family at the Calcutta House on Monday October 28, 2024. Taft was a decorated veteran who served in the United States Army active duty for 30 years. Taft was born on March 16,1948 in Natchez, Mississippi, to the parentage of Erma Webster-Mays and Sun-Dean. He was raised by Erma and Willie Mays. At the of 18 he went to live in New Orleans, LA with his older brother Andrew Webster where he decided to enlist into the United States Army. Upon enlisting his first duty station was Erlangen, Germany as a tanker. Throughout his military career Taft received numerous awards and top-ranked Non-Commissioned Officer evaluations. These achievements allowed him to attend military academy's such as Drill Sergeant Academy, Non-Commissioned Officer Course, Basic Non-Commissioned Officer Course, and The Sergeant Majors Academy where he excelled and graduated in the top 10 percent of his graduating classes. Forging into his career Taft earned the respect of his many peers and colleagues often known as a man that could forge and turn companies and battalions into thriving units. At his assigned duty stations, he earned him the nickname Pac-Man because he would chew up a soldier to get them into alignment with company core values. One of his greatest accomplishments was becoming Command Sergeant Major of all ROTC college programs in 40 of the 50 states. In the latter part of his 30-year military career Taft would reflect on his time and achievements thanking his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on giving him the knowledge to be successful and would often say, "I may not have a college degree, but God gave me a PhD in common sense." After his military service he attended barber college then went on to work for Wal-Mart for 12 years. However, his real work was becoming a servant for God and serving in Good Hope Baptist Church as an usher. He was passionate about working in his yard, volunteering and helping others, working in the church, and singing in the choir. Taft was a good husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and brother-in-law who loved family and always promised his mother to take care of his family and siblings.
