Alton Weatherspoon, also lovingly known to many as Spoon, was born in Beaumont, Tx. on October 3, 1946 to Ada Williams and Fred Weatherspoon. He was educated at Adams Elementary, Dunbar and Charlton Pollard High School, Class of 1965. After graduating he became a member of the United States Army where he served his country for 4 years. He returned to Beaumont, Tx. meeting the love of his life and wed January 22, 1977 and began his life in Jennings, LA. He was employed as a mechanic at Donald Chevrolet for 5 years, then worked as a welder at Leevac (SVA) Shipyard for 20 years, and lastly as a Sheriff Deputy for 5 years at the Jeff Davis Sheriff's Department before retiring. Through the years he served faithfully at St. Paul Baptist Church where he sang in the Male Chorus and became a trusted Decon until his departure.
He loved visiting his hometown of Beaumont, Tx. for gatherings and events with his family and classmates. He developed lifelong friendships while a member of the American Bowling Congress (ABC) bowling league spanning 30 years. He was a fan of Grambling State University where he sent both his daughters to collage. Everyone who knew Spoon knows he was very social and enjoyed spirited conversations sharing words of wisdom and laughs. He was a man of action, and always willing to help when needed. He loved his family, his church and his community.
Alton was preceded in death by both parents, sister Geneva Garrett, brothers Willie Hill, and Al Weatherspoon. Those left with cherished memories are his wife of 48 years Barbara Weatherspon, daughters Myra Michelle Weatherspoon-Frost, and Isrechea (Joe) Garrett-Bolden; grandchildren Matthew Colston, Timothy McCoy, Tyler McCoy, and Maeja Frost; Godchildren Ella Boxie, James DeJhon' Haley, Tionne Cormier, Renoldo Hawkins, Jerome Dugas Jr, and Wilbert Guillory and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins and many beloved friends.
